Thrust 1: Disability-centric Built Environment (DBE)

One critical mission in the built environment is to solve disability-related inequity. Current legislation for relieving such inequities focuses on design guidelines and less so in monitoring their actual experience with respect to the operation & maintenance of infrastructure. With a significant development in sensing systems, we now have unprecedented data sources to solve various problems. However, there is little available data regarding wheelchair user perceptions across the built environment. Therefore, the HBE lab aims to create a transformative approach to measure a wheelchair user’s personal comfort using open-source solutions, allowing more citizens to engage in the inequity challenge.
